Background:
As the daughter of two Bajoran doctors, Carys' life and that of her siblings was pretty much in place by the time she was born. And when she asked for the Bajoran equivalent of a toy tricorder before her fourth birthday, her parents, Nallon Dern and Albra Vena considered it a sign from the prophets. They expected much from Carys from that point on, pushing the child and then young woman to excel in her academics and in sports. Indeed, Carys grew up graceful and became the woman her parents had expected.
Up until she joined Starfleet right out of medical school.
Growing up as the daughter of Nallon Dern, leading geneticist and Albra Vena, a leading obstetrician was hard enough. After that, she was the younger sister of Nallon Cauv, a young man who ranged far ahead of his peers even at a young age. Carys had never been simply... Carys.
Starfleet, she had argued, would give her that and against their better judgement, her parents gave their leave. Carys joined Starfleet, becoming a doctor thanks to her medical schooling and hasn't looked back since.
As the years passed, her parents came to believe that Carys had made the right choice and were glad to have her so close by when the Expanse so affected Bajor. During that time, Cauv was killed in the geoterran upheaval and Carys was able to mourn with her family.
When the war was over, the Navarone was one of a handful of ships that had survived the Azati onslaught and like everyone else in the galaxy, Carys was personally affected. Her sister, Pana was aboard the Saratoga, where she served as a doctor and was killed with the rest of the crew.
After a month of mourning with her family, Carys returned to Starfleet, no longer having the taste for space travel but knowing she had duties to attend to. A year later, she is ready to return to space and has accepted the Chief Medical Officer position on board Starfleet's newest ship, the Nemesis.
