Background:
Luke Joshua Randolph was born on Alpha Centauri to Moira and Kevin Randolph, the second infant to arrive from a delivery of fraternal twins. His brother Sean was first to emerge and therefore considered for all time, much to Luke's chagrin as the older of the two even though Sean preceded him by a matter of minutes.
Despite Sean winning the title as first born child of the Randolph family, that was the extent of Luke's hostility towards his brother. As twins they were close as any siblings could be and were never far from each other in play and in mischief. Raised primarily by their mother, since their father was a Starfleet officer, the two children spent the first six years of their lives in Alpha Centauri in a normal, loving environment.
Luke however, had begun to display traits characteristic of gifted children and upon testing was determined to possess a high IQ, possibly peaking at a 170 by adulthood. While Sean's IQ was also high (in the 125 – 140 range), it was clear that Luke was the smarter of the two. However, any effort to introduce Luke into a learning program for gifted children was negated by his refusal to be separated from his brother. While Moira, a school teacher would have preferred her son to reach his potential, she understood the bond between the two and did not press the matter.
However, such considerations were sidelined when the Xindi advance reached Alpha Centauri. Moira had already received the devastating news that the ship her husband had served on, the Venture had been destroyed in the battle that lost Earth. With the other refugees, Moira and the boys spent the next two years travelling the wilderness of space on board the SS Bonaventure, fending off Xindi attacks and trying to build some semblance of a life during the Exodus from their old lives.
Eventually however, the fleet arrived at Gaia and New Earth Colony was established. Like all children growing up in colony, the two children learned how to survive on little as Moira offered her services as school teacher to the newly established colony school. Eventually, life returned to normal, as normal as it could be after the destruction of earth and its colonies. Like before, Luke excelled at his studies while Sean had to work at it. Despite this however, Luke had no ambition to be parted from his brother and so he never tried any more than was necessary, in order to keep them together.
It was when the boys were in their teens that Moira met Ronald Hammond. Ronnie as he was called, was a Starfleet officer stationed at Starfleet Command. Working in civilian affairs, Ronnie and Moira fell in love and very soon, Ronnie was a regular fixture in the Randolph home. While Luke's easy going manner accommodated Ronnie's presence in their mother's life, Sean however had difficulty accepting the man. This situation was further exacerbated by the fact that Ronnie tended to favor Luke more because they got along. It unfortunately created the one thing Luke never wanted, his brother feeling less because of him.
The result of this was Sean becoming withdrawn, brooding and had frequent clashes with Ronnie, a situation that did not improve with Ronnie'smarriage to Moira and later on the birth of their baby sister Serena. While Luke tried to play peacekeeper, it was clear that Ronnie had given up on winning Sean over. This only made his brother feel worse and Luke guilty because he had Ronnie's acceptance.
Furthermore, Luke easy going charm made him highly attractive to the opposite sex and it took only a few well placed words and smiles to bed a woman.
Following their graduation from school, Luke had no particular ambition to do anything with his life until he became aware of Sean's desire to join the Starfleet Marine Corps. Aware that Sean was doing this to leave an intolerable home situation, Luke joined him when a final argument between Sean and Ronnie drove his brother permanently away from home. Determined not to be separated, Luke joined with him.
However, upon joining, Luke found that he rather liked the Starfleet Marine Corps formerly called MACOs and while his intellect was useful, Luke also learned that in the field his brother was natural leader. Throughout the next four years, Luke and Sean joined Alpha Squad on Gaia, becoming close comrades with Major Merrick, Lieutenant Rickman and Sergeant Richards.
It was also during this time that Luke met one Corinne Harwood, a fellow comrade in Alpha Squad.
Unlike most women, Corinne resisted any and all attempts Luke made to charm her until finally they developed a close friendship which he secretly relishes. She's the first girl he's understood and the only one who won't tolerate his womanizing behavior. He may love her for that alone.
Since the end of the Xindi War, Luke and Sean were transferred to the new ship Nemesis, with Luke taking on the role as the MACO comtech while Sean earning his Sergeant stripes.
PYSCHOLOGICAL PROFILE
Luke is charming, funny and able to win any woman on the strength of his smile and easy going manner. Confident to the point of arrogance, he has learned to use his intelligence without making himself overbearing. His brother keeps his perspective in check and there is nothing Luke wouldn't do for Sean, no sacrifice too great. He is proud of everything that Sean achieves and was thrilled when his brother' natural ability to lead was recognized. Happy to take the back seat, Luke's only failing is perhaps a lack of ambition. For him, the secret to life is how many women he can bed and how much challenge being a Shark can provide.
Everything else is just gravy.
