Background:
Vedder was seventeen years old when Earth blew up. She would have died then too had she not been travelling with her father to Lunar. A bone fide door to door salesman, Siemen Vedder had been on a business trip to the Moon colony, the school holiday period allowing his youngest daughter to tag along. They were evacuated as all the debris following Earth's explosion hurtled towards Lunar, bundled on a ship in a rush, no time for anything else. Eventually, they journeyed to Ceti Alpha V aboard the SS Bonaventure.
Her mother Carmela (née López Marcos) and older sister Isabel Leta perished with Earth.
Her father later fell casualty to the Klingon attack on Gaia in 2165. By then, Vedder was a medical doctor in her late twenties and earning a PhD in Xenobiology at Starfleet Academy.
When the Xindi war picked up again a year later, Vedder was posted on the SS Intrepid as a medical officer. Still green, the Push at Bajor in '67, destroying the sphere to stop the Xindi encroaching further, was her baptism of fire.
Now assigned to the SS Vanguard, Vedder spends most of her time out in space, though she still retains the little house she shared with her father in Earth Quarter.
Back on Earth, Vedder was into athletics and ballet. Nowadays, she simply keeps fit at the gym. Life on a ship doesn't allow for much more of that.
Psychological profile:
Studious and rather bookish, Vedder forges on. She hit the ground running when she first reached Gaia and she hasn't stopped since. Even losing her father a few years ago seemed to spur her on. Always a straight-A student, that's not to say she didn't have her rebellious phases but her curiosity and desire to help and learn outweighed the survivor's guilt she originally suffered when Earth was destroyed. She and her sister Isabel had planned and dreamed to become doctors and so Cate has done it for them both.
She has excellent bedside manners, making her patients and staff around her comfortable, but while she can speak her mind and doesn't let others push her around, Vedder is rather quiet outside of the job setting. Despite all odds, she has an optimistic outlook on life.
